Wonder Woman: Lynn Power

Wonder Woman: Lynn Power

Hard-working, dedicated, and motivated- All words you’d use to describe a business owner. It’s no surprise, then, that these words perfectly describe Lynn Power. Spearheading not one but multiple businesses in her career, Lynn is an unmatched force in the professional world- and this month’s Wonder Woman.

As someone who’s seen and heard it all, we wanted to delve into Lynn’s mind and gain some insight into what she’s done to be a successful business owner, tips she’d give to budding professionals, and inside access to her personal preferences. Being the co-founder of MASAMI, a Japanese haircare brand that we’ve partnered with (spoiler alert!), Lynn is the perfect addition to our Wonder Women crew.

What inspired you to start MASAMI?

It was serendipity! I met James in 2018. He had been working on clean haircare formulations for about 10 years and he needed help now with branding, go-to-market strategy, e-commerce, etc. So we found that our skill sets are quite complementary and decided to partner together to launch MASAMI.

Lynn & James, MASAMI

Could you tell us a little about the name -- what does MASAMI mean?

MASAMI has two meanings. First, we decided to name our company after Masa, James' husband who is our muse. He brought us the discovery of Mekabu, our hero Japanese ocean botanical. It also means truly beautiful in Japanese.

What is a problem you encountered with your hair that a Masami product solved?

My hair is thin, colored and can have a lot of flyaways -- looking messy and unkempt. MASAMI has helped my hair look smooth, shiny and manageable.

Which product did you use?

I love our Styling Cream, that's my go-to product for flyaways.

Describe the Masami customer-- what’s she like?

Our customers are actually not just "shes", about 40% of our customers are men. Our customers tend to have hair challenges with frizz, unruly curls, thinning hair, etc.  They have tried a lot of products and know the difference between high quality, clean products and mass products. We also have found that women will find our brand when they are pregnant as we don't have sulfates, parabens or phthalates.

It is incredibly impressive that Masami is one of several companies you’ve founded. Could you share with our readers some of the other companies you’ve worked on and the lessons you’ve learned along the way that have impacted the way you run Masami?

I've worked with some of the biggest ad agencies like BBDO, McCann, JWT, Grey and Ogilvy & Mather, And I've been fortunate to work on some of the most iconic brands in the world like American Express, Clinique, L'Oreal and Hershey's. I've definitely learned about the importance of connecting the dots and having a content strategy that tells a bigger story across multiple touchpoints. Not as easy to do with a small brand and limited resources, but a good goal to strive for.

What’s one word to describe your management/leadership style?

Player/coach (ok, that's technically two).

In addition to being an entrepreneur, you’re also a mother. What are 3 words you would use to describe your parenting style?

Supportive, permissive, trusting.

One piece of advice you would give aspiring entrepreneurs in the consumer space?

Build a network of peers, advisors and mentors. It's incredibly valuable (especially on dark days) to have perspective of people you trust and people who have gone through it.

By the way, do you think multitasking works?

I know that most articles and research says no, but I will say yes. I think (maybe naively) that I have mastered multi-tasking

How about working from home -- do you think it’s here to stay?

Yes, to a point. It's easier in certain industries than others but I think it will be harder for companies to insist that their employees are 100% working from the office. People want flexibility.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I try to start my day with yoga (I'm a fan of Yoga with Adriene) and then I will get my social posts out of the way. Then I am following up with salons, retail partners, a potential new livestream app, things like that. When we are in production with our formulas, my days are 100% product focused. I like the variety.

How do you find time to relax after a long day?

I enjoy my glass of wine. When I'm in Palm Springs, we like to end the day in the hot tub.

How would you describe your personal style?

Classic but with an edge.

You’re a client of Access79 -- what’s your favorite piece?

I just picked up the Lyra Gold Bracelet. It's a simple piece that goes with everything.

Rings or earrings?

I like to play around with rings more because I never change my earrings (diamond studs my husband gave me).

Access79 Stackable Rings

Emeralds or diamonds?

Diamonds for sure.

You are our CEO Priyanka bonded on both your time in Chicago. What is your favorite restaurant in Chicago?

When I lived in Chicago, my husband and I used to love Coco Pazzo. I think it's still there. . .

Okay, favorite restaurant of all time?

I have an addiction for Lou Malnati's pizza so that would have to be it.

Now that things are opening up, what’s a place you’re dying to go?

We are really hoping to get back to Japan -- it's such an amazing place to visit. But it might be in the spring next year. We'll see how things go.

Do you think women can have it all?

I don't think anyone can have it all, really. And it sets unfair expectations to think we can. There are always trade offs in life. For me, having my work fit my life vs. the other way around is the closest I've come to having it all.
